The Australian Financial Review said it plainly this week:
“And the threat of big job losses is very real.”
They even captured it in a single caption:
“Richard White is disrupting himself to stare down AI disruption.”
That’s not just a WiseTech story. That’s the story of every industry right now. Here are the numbers:
WiseTech — Revenue up 76% to $952 million. Their CEO said it plainly: “The era of manually writing code as the core act of engineering is over.” The cuts target roles “where we have seen AI dramatically improve throughput.”
Profits up. Headcount down. By design.
Block — cutting 4,000 of 10,000 staff after gross profit rose 17% to $14.57 billion.
Read that again. Profits up. Headcount down.
This is the new equation. And it’s not limited to tech companies. It’s spreading to every industry where repeatable, process-driven work exists.
I want to be direct about something, because I think a lot of the commentary around this gets it wrong:
Agentive Group was not built to replace people.
It was built to stop businesses from wasting them.
There’s a difference. A big one.
The finance officer who spends 10 hours a week re-keying invoices isn’t doing finance.
They’re doing data entry. The ops manager who compiles a daily report that could compile itself isn’t managing operations. They’re managing a spreadsheet.
When we automate those workflows, that person gets their 10 hours back. They do the work that actually needs them — the analysis, the judgment calls, the relationships, the decisions.
That’s not replacement. That’s leverage.
The companies cutting 40–50% of their teams are doing something different.
They’re restructuring around AI because they over-hired for work that was always going to be automated eventually.
Mid-sized businesses that move now — intelligently, deliberately, with the right systems — don’t end up there. They build leaner from the start and grow without the bloat.
The question isn’t “will AI take jobs?” Some of it will. Some of it already has. The better question is: what kind of business do you want to run when the dust settles?
The businesses that treat this moment as an infrastructure decision will compound. The ones that treat it as a news story will watch from the sidelines.
